Downloader browser extension
Privacy policy
Effective and last updated:
This policy explains how the Downloader browser extension, maintained by renzceee, handles information when connecting your browser to the Downloader desktop app.
1. Information handled
The extension handles information needed to identify media, send download requests, and recover downloads you previously requested:
- Browsing and download information: current page and tab URLs and titles, detected media URLs, download filenames, magnet links, and download handoff status.
- Website content: video and audio source information, media titles, page metadata, and player configuration used to identify downloadable media and available quality or audio options.
- Authentication information: cookies associated with detected media destinations and observed request headers, which may include Authorization, Referer, Origin, User-Agent, and Accept.
- User activity: network request and response metadata, media resource entries, and playback events used for media detection and recovery. The extension does not log keystrokes, mouse movements, or scrolling.
- Local preferences: download-redirection settings, appearance preferences, and status messages.
The extension does not read Chrome's complete browsing-history database. It does not request your name, email address, payment details, health information, or personal messages. Download URLs and page content may themselves contain personal information supplied by the websites you use.
2. How information is used
Information is used to show detected media, inspect quality and audio options, redirect eligible browser downloads, send magnet links for torrent review, and resume or recover previously requested media downloads.
Media detection can run while you browse permitted pages, even when automatic download redirection is off. Opening the side panel can inspect detected media and transfer relevant session information to the desktop app before you click Download. Session information is refreshed when you request a media download and may also be refreshed when recovering a previously requested download. Detection alone does not start a new media download.
Normal download handoff and media handling exclude incognito browsing.
3. Where information goes
The extension communicates with the installed Downloader app through 127.0.0.1:17839, a loopback address on your own computer. Download requests, media information, and relevant session context are sent to that app to provide these features.
The desktop app connects to the corresponding file or media servers to inspect and download content. Authentication headers are restricted to their observed origins, and cookies are matched to their applicable domains, paths, security requirements, and expiry. Those servers receive the requests needed to provide the content, including your network IP address and applicable session information.
When you send a magnet link for torrent review or start a torrent in the desktop app, torrent metadata and file transfers may involve trackers, peers, and the distributed hash table. Participants can see your network IP address and the torrent identifier as part of the BitTorrent protocol.
The extension includes no analytics, advertising, or developer telemetry service. The developer does not receive your browsing or session information through the extension. Websites, media providers, torrent participants, and services you choose to contact have their own data practices.
4. Storage and retention
Preferences and the latest status message are stored locally in the browser until changed or the extension is removed. Temporary per-tab media information, request context, and handoff or recovery state use browser session storage. Media state is reset when the page navigates and removed when its tab closes. Session storage is cleared when the extension is disabled, reloaded, updated, or the browser restarts.
The desktop app keeps local download history, including ordinary download URLs, filenames, save locations, and progress, until you remove the entries. Media history can retain a watch-page URL and quality or audio selection. Known authentication and signature query parameters are removed from retained media watch-page URLs; this filtering may not cover every website's custom parameters.
Torrent history can also retain source or magnet links, torrent identifiers, trackers, selected files, save locations, and transfer progress until its entry is removed.
Media cookies and request headers remain in the desktop app's memory rather than its persisted download history or assembly checkpoints. Removing the browser extension does not remove desktop download history or saved files.
5. Your controls
- Turn off Redirect downloads to stop automatic browser-download and magnet handoff. Media detection and manual media download controls remain available.
- Use your browser's extension settings to restrict permitted websites, disable the extension, or remove it. Disabling it stops extension processing; removing it also clears its local browser storage.
- Close a tab or navigate away to clear that tab's detected media state. Restart the browser or disable the extension to clear its session storage.
- Use the desktop app's controls to pause or cancel downloads and remove history entries. Removing a completed item from the list keeps the downloaded file; deleting it from storage removes the file as well.
Information stored by the websites you use, including their browser cookies, remains under those websites' and your browser's controls.
6. Security
The browser-to-desktop connection stays on your computer through HTTP loopback. Remote file and media connections use the source server's HTTP or HTTPS protocol. Local extension settings and desktop history rely on your browser, operating system, and disk protections; Downloader does not add a separate encryption layer to those local records. Keep your device and browser secure and avoid sharing session information.
7. Limited use
Downloader uses information only to provide its disclosed download features, in accordance with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Information is not sold, used for advertising or profiling, used for unrelated purposes, or used to determine creditworthiness or for lending. Transfers are limited to those needed for the download features described above.
8. Questions and updates
For privacy questions, contact paymerenz@gmail.com. Information you choose to send by email is handled to respond to your request. Your email provider and Gmail process that correspondence under their own policies. Avoid including passwords, session cookies, authorization headers, or private download URLs.
